Question
the mass of a particular eagle is twice that of a hunted pigeon. suppose the pigeon is flying north at 16.3 m/s, when the eagle swoops down, grabs the pigeon, and flies off. At the instant right before the attack, the eagle is flying towards the pigeon at an angle of 51.1 degree, below the horizontal, and a speed of 33.9 m/s.1.) what is the speed of the eagle immediately after it catches its prey?
2.) what is the magnitude of the angle, measured from the horizontal, at which the eagle is flying immediately after the strike? the mass of a particular eagle is twice that of a hunted pigeon. suppose the pigeon is flying north at 16.3 m/s, when the eagle swoops down, grabs the pigeon, and flies off. Explanation / Answer
Given,
speed of pigeon = 16.3 m/s (north)
speed of eagle = 33.9 m/s
Let us assume the mass of pigeon be m, then
m x 16.3 i + 2m x (33.9 cos51.1° i - 33.9 sin51.1° j) = 3mv
v = 19.625 i - 17.59 j m/s
1) so final speed, v = sqrt(19.6252 + 17.592) = 26.35 m/s
2) angle = tan-1(17.59/19.625) = 41.87° below horizontal.
