o du 3G 5:07 AM @ 4896@ + HW2 summer 2017 Halliday, Fundamentals of Physics, 10e Chapter 25, Problem 018 The figure shows a circuit section of four air-filled capacitors that is connected to a larger circuit. The graph below the section shows the electric potential V(x) as a function of position x along the lower part of the section, through capacitor 4. Similarly, the graph above the section shows the electric potential V(x) as a function of position x along the upper part of the section, through capacitors 1, 2, and 3. Capacitor 3 has a capacitance of 0.98 F. What are the capacitances of (a) capacitor 1 and (b) capacitor 2? sV (a) Number (b) mber Cik i, you would lik" to Show work for this question: 9emeww ation Attempts; of used san POR u

Explanation / Answer

For the Capacitor 4, The potential difference = 12 Volts

So as C1, C2, C3 are in series and combined they are in parallel with C4

So Potential V1 + V2 + V3 = 12 V

V3 = 12 - 2 - 5 = 5V

Hence potential across capacitor 3 is 5V

charge stored in C3 = C3 V = 0.98 x 5 = 4.9 uC

This Charge is constant acros the upper three capacitors.

So 4.9 = C1V1 = C2V2

C1 = 4.9/V1 = 4.9/2 = 2.45uF

C2 = 4.9/V2 = 4.9/5 = 0.98 uF

Hence capacitor 1 has capacitance 2.45 uF

Capacitor 2 has capacitance 0.98 uF
