For this lab, you will calculate the momentum before and after a collision using the two blue cars in your kit. To start, measure the momentum of a single car. Place the end of one track on the block of wood and let the car go. Choose two points at least 50cm apart along the flat part of its path to measure its speed. Measure the distance between the two points and divide by the time it takes to cover that distance. Do this three times and find your average velocity. This is what you should use in finding the momentum. Next, place a 2nd cart in the path of the first. You want the first car to hit the second so that the second car moves in a straight line in the same direction as the first. You may have to try this several times. Just perform the experiment according to the description given. For the first table, you need to measure the time covered for a distance which you have to measure in advance. This will give you the initial velocity of the first car ( get the average by taking 3 readings). Multiply the mass of this car with the average velocity found to find the initial momentum of thia car.
Next, you need to place the 2nd car in the way, make a collision and just as the collison starts, start your stopwatch and see the time (until it stops). Then measure the distance moved by each car after collision. Dividing this by the repective time gives the final velocity for each car. Then muktiply with the masses to get the final momentum.
For table 2, calculate energy using
