Question
Texas Wesleyan University used to have a colony of rats that were used for genetics research. I was particularly interested in 2 coat color genes. One gene causes rats to be brown (B-) or black (bb). The other gene is called dilution & it causes colors to look “lighter”. For example, genetically black rats that are also dd look grey, genetically brown but dd rats are called "cinnamon". In 2016, I had the following rats: 38 grey, 29 black, 25 cinnamon, & 17 brown. a) Assuming the population is in HWE, estimate the frequency of the B & b alleles? b) Now, estimate the frequency of the D & d alleles? Is this population in HWE? c) Assuming this population is in HWE, what percentage of the newborn rats will be grey in any subsequent generation?

solution:
a) grey = 38
black = 29
cinnamon = 25
brown = 17
The frequency of B and b alleles :
(38 grey + 29 black) = 67 bb
67 / (38+29+25+17) = 67 / 109 = 0.6147 = q2
q = 0.784, p = 0.216
The frequency of the D and d alleles:
(38 grey + 25 cinnamon ) = 63 dd
63 / (38+29+25+17) = 63 / 109 = 0.5780 = q2
q = 0.76 , p = 0.24
c) df = 1
