A very useful non-invasve imaging tool in medicine uses nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). It is based on the fact that the proton has spin (similarto the electron). As with the electron, the proton can only have spin “up” or spin “down” and in the presence of a strong (external) magnetic field these two states have an energy difference of E = 2.5 x 10-26J. Placing a patient in a strong magnetic field excites her protons and when they de-excite (spontaneously), they will emit radio frequency (RF) photons which are used to form “images” in a computer (magnetic resonance imaging or MRI).
