Question

(3 pts) Part A The formant frequencies of speech are also influenced by the density of the propagating medium. The human vocal tract is approximately 17.3 cm long. What is the first and second formants of this voice? The velocity of sound in air is vair=331ms. (Hint: How can you use the length of the vocal tract to find the frequency? )
Part B Divers working deep in the ocean breathe a mixture of gases, of which 97 % is helium [12]. The speed of sound in helium is 965 m/s. How does this affect the first two formants of the diver's voices? (Hint: The formant frequency is proportional to the speed of sound in the gas that fills the cavity.)

Explanation / Answer

Answer:-

Given Data:-

L = 17.3 cm = (17.3/100) = 0.173 m

vair = 331 m/s

Part-A ) we have to calcualte the first and second formant frequencies.

use a below formula for Formant frequencies

F1 -first formant frequency

F1 = vair / 4L.

as we consider here a vocal track is a tube. open at one end and closed at other.

And the second formant is F2 = F1 *(2z -1)

So first formant frequency F1 = vair / 4L. = 331 m/s / 4* 0.173

F1 = 478.32 Hz . (Answer)

Second Formant frequency F2 = F1 *(2z -1) = 478.32 *( 2*2-1)

= 1434.97 Hz. (Answer)

Part-B ) We have to calculate the first and second formant frequency for helium.

first formant F1helium = (Vhelium /Vair ) * F1 air

   F1helium = (965 /331) * 478.32

F1helium = 1394.49 Hz . (Answer)

second formant F2helium = (Vhelium /Vair ) * F2air

F2helium = (965 /331) * 1434.97

F2helium = 4175.76 Hz. (Answer)

As per hint given the fromant frequencies is proprtional to the speed of sound. here speed of sound is more so we get the fisrt and second forman is greater. than air formant.
