Question
Using the methods described in class lectures regarding the geometric relationship between the components of an electromagnetic wave (E&M; Wave), i.e., the electric field, E vector, and the magnetic induction, B vector, determine the direction that the electromagnetic wave will travel. Clearly show the direction that the wave will travel. a. The E&M; Wave will travel along the negative x-direction; b. The E&M; Wave will travel along the positive y-direction; c. The E&M; Wave will travel along the negative y-direction; d. The E&M; Wave will travel along the positive z-direction; e. The E&M; Wave will travel along the negative z-direction.Explanation / Answer
E is the electric field vector, and B is the magnetic field vector of the EM wave. For electromagnetic waves E and B are always perpendicular to each other and perpendicular to the direction of propagation. The direction of propagation is the direction of E x B( cross product of E and B ) . In the given condition E x B will be along positive Z direction ( positive X direction vector cross positive Y direction gives the resultant along Postive Z).Therefore, the wave will travel in Positive Z direction .
