Question
(4%) Problem 16: A harmonic wave travels in the positive x direction at 12 m/s along a taught string. A fixed point on the string oscillates as a function of time according to the equation y 0.0075 cos(2t) where y is the displacement in meters and the time t is in seconds. 33% Part (a) What is the amplitude of the wave, in meters? F 33% Part (b) What is the frequency of the wave, in hertz? 33% Part (c) What is the wavelength of the wave, in meters? Grade Summ Wavelength 81.7610 Deductions PotentialExplanation / Answer
We know that the standard equation is
y = ACos(wt)
where y is displacement , A is amplitude , w is angular frequency and t is time
therefore on comparing we get
w = 2
angular frequency (w) = 2Pi*N
where N is linear frequency , therfore
2Pi*N = 2
N = 2/(2Pi) =0.3183 Hz
(c) Wavelength = speed/frequency = 12/0.3183 = 37.699 m
