A rating curve is a graph of stage of the water versus discharge.
The rating curve is generally plotted by taking discharge on x-axis and stage on y-axis. The advantage of measuring the discharge of a river by indirect methods like float gauging and current metering is, they can be used for larger streams and rivers. The disadvantages are, 1. because of finite number of measuring points, complex velocity profiles are not represented correctly. 2.difficult to accurately measure the flow reversals and trasversing apparatus may disrupt the flow field.
