Question
Which answer is correct and why is C incorrect? please explain!! thanks :)
A hydrogen atom is isolated in a vacuum chamber The electron is now separated from the proton and moved to a distance 1 cm away. Let F_G be the magnitude of the gravitational force between the proton and electron, and let F_E be the magnitude of the electric force between the proton and electron. How does the ratio F_G/F_E change as the particles are separated? (A) F_G/F_E does not change; it is the same nonzero value for all separations (B) F_G/F_E becomes larger as the particles are moved apart. (C) F_G/F_E becomes smaller as the particles are moved apart. (D) F_G/F_E cannot be evaluated; it is undefined for all separations.Explanation / Answer
when a proton and elecron are sepearetd by a distance of 1 cm
Gravitational force between them is
Fg = Gm1m2/r^2
G is universal gravitational constant = 6.67 *10^-11 Nm^2/kg^2
m1 is the mass of proton = 1.67 *10^-27 kg
m2 is the mass of electron = 9.11 *10^-31 kg
electrical forvce between them
Fe = K q1q2/r^2
K is 9 *10^9
with r being for both
so
Fg/Fe = Gm1m2/r^2)/(kq1q2/r^2)
by cancelling r on both sides
Fg/Fe = Gm1m2/Kq1q2
which is inindependent on distance HENCE C IS INCORRECT.
So Correct answer is option A
