Question

Select all that apply, but please explain reasoning.

Unpolarized light is send through two polarizers. The first polarizer s oriented vertically, the 2nd polarizer Is oriented at 45 degrees (clockwise) from the vertical. Which action below would increase the Intensity of the light making it through the 2nd polarizer? Rotating the 2nd polarizer 15 degrees counter-clockwise Rotating both polarizers 15 degrees clockwise. Rotating both polarizers 15 degrees clockwise Rotating the 2nd polarizer 15 degrees clockwise Rotating the first polarizer 15 degrees clockwise Rotating the first polarizer 15 degrees counter-clockwise

Explanation / Answer

When unpolarized light passes through the polarizer, intensity is reduced to

I’=I0/2

Then as this light passes through the analyzer, as per law of Malus

I = I’2 cos2

Where is the relative angle between the two polarizers and initially it is 45 degree clockwise with the vertical. So now

When the 2nd polarizer is rotated counter clockwise by 15 degree, the relative angle decreases and intensity increases.

When the 1st polarizer is rotated clockwise by 15 degree, the relative angle decreases and intensity increases.
