Question
The figure to the right shows two long, straight currents I _1 = 0.8 A end I_2 = 1.3 A. They are both pointing into the page, and the distance between them is r = 0.6 m. Is the force between the currents attractive or ? If the current both have length L = 8.2 m, what is the magnitude of the force between them? Draw (on the diagram) one of the magnetic field the current I_1. Be sure to indicate the direction, as determined by the right-hand rule. The point P is halfway between the current (0.3 m from each). Find the total magnetic field at that point due to the two currents. You do not need to give your answer in components just tell me the magnitude, and Indicate the directions using words or an arrow on the diagram (Remember. I_2 and I_1 are different of current.)Explanation / Answer
a)The force between the wires will be attractive since they carries the current in the same direction.
b)for between two wires is given by
F = u0 I1 I2 L/2 pi R
F = 4 pi x 10^-7 x 0.8 x 1.3 x 8.2/ 2 pi x 0.6 = 2.84 x 10^-6 N
Hence, F = 2.84 x 10^-6 N
c)From the right hand rule the magnetic field of each wire will be anticlockwise direction.
d)Bp = B2 - B1
Bp = u0 I2/ 2 pi r2 - u0 I1/2 pi r1
Bp = u0 / 2 pi r (I2 - I1)
Bp = 4 pi x 10^-7 / 2 pi x 0.3 (1.3 - 0.8) = 3.33 x 10^-7 T
Hence, Bp = 3.33 x 10^-7 T
