Problem 9.25 A 1.6 kg block slides along a frictionless surface at 1.5 m/s. A second block, sliding at a faster 4.7 m/s, collides with the first from behind and sticks to it. The final velocity of the combined blocks is 2.5 m/s. Part A What was the mass of the second block? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units. m2 alue kg Submit My Answers Give Up incorrect, Try Again; 6 attempts remaining

Explanation / Answer

part 1 )

this is inelastic collision , here linear momentum remain conserve

m1v1 + m2v2 = (m1+m2)*v

m1 = 1.6 kg

v1 = 1.5 m/s

v2 = 4.7 m/s

v = 2.5 m/s

1.6 * 1.5 + m2 * 4.7 = (1.6 + m2) * 2.5

2.4 + 4.7 m2 = 4 + 2.5 m2

m2 = 0.73 kg

part 2 )

this is also inelastic collison

initallly there is only 3 trains when collide to 4th one

3m * 1.6 + m * 3.7 = 4m * v

v = 2.125 m/s ( combined speed of all 4 trains )

now gain apply momentum conservation on 5th train colliosn with 4 coupled trains

4m * 2.125 + m * 0 = 5m * vf

vf = 1.7 m/s
