Question

a) List the following EM waves frequency in order of their frequency (lowest to highest): ultraviolet, infrared, Radio/TV Gamma Ray, Visible, X-ray Lowest _____ Continuing _____ In a device called an Interferometer light travels to a mirror, and then reflects back to the source. Suppose that the time sensitivity of your measuring device is 1 mu sec (microsecond). How far away must you place the mirror from the source so that the total travel time is 1 mu sec? Distance _____ b) The "edge of the solar system" is at about 3.2 billion kilometers (billion = Giga = 10^9) at the orbit of Neptune. How long would it take a radio signal from Earth to reach Neptune? time _____

Explanation / Answer

4.a) Increasing order of frequency

(Lowest) Radio/TV , Infrared , Visible , ultraviolet , X-Ray , Gamma Rays (Highest)

Keeping time sensitivity of measuring device in view , total time travelled , t = 2 microseconds

If d is the distance between source and mirror, then total distance travelled = 2d

Speed of electromegnetic waves= c = 3*108 m/s

Now,     distance = speed * time

or     2d = 3*108*2*10-6

or d = 300 m

b) Here,

Distance, d = 3.2*109 km = 3.2*1012 m

Time taken by radio signal to travel from Earth to Neptune , t = d/c = 3.2*1012/(3*108) = 10667 sec = 2.96 hr
