Question

Problem 25.09

You want to take a full-length photo of your friend who is 1.86 m tall, using a 35.0 mm camera having a 50.0 mm lens. The image dimensions of 35.0 mm film are 24.0 mm ×  36.0 mm and you want to make this a vertical photo in which your friend's image completely fills the image area.

Part A

How far should your friend stand from the lens?

Express your answer with the appropriate units.

Part B

How far is the lens from the film?

Express your answer with the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

Let distance of friend from the lens = do

The magnification is,

m = hi / ho

Here, hi = 36 mm

ho = 1.86 m

m = -36.0*10^(-3) / 1.86 = -0.01935

m = -di / do

-0.01935 = -di / do

di = 0.01935*do

Apply the lens equation,

1 / di + 1 / do = 1 / f

1 / 0.01935*do + 1/ do = 1 / 50*10^(-3)

1.01935 / 0.01935*do = 1 / 50*10^(-3)

do = 2.63 m

(b)

distance of lens from the film,

di = 0.01935*2.63

di = 5.094 cm
