Question
Explain why the amount of solar energy absorbed within Venus' atmosphere and on its ground is practically the same as for the Earth, in spite of the fact that Venus is 30% closer to the Sun. How much more solar energy per square centimeter does Venus receive at the top of its atmosphere compared to at the top of the Earth's atmosphere (i.e., if you placed solar cells in close orbit around Venus and the Earth, what would be the ratio of power produced by the Venus cell compared to the Earth cell?).
Explanation / Answer
Green house effect is the main reason behind it. The infrared rays that are coming from the sun is reflected by the earth but a large amount of heat energy is entraped by the molecules of gas present in the earth atmosphere whereas on the other hand venus doesnot have any atmosphere so the heat energy reflects back to the space without being absorbed.
To compare the flux of earth and venus
Flux venus/ flux earth = (R earth/R venus)^2
Flux of venus =1370*(1/0.72)^2
=2643 W/m^2
Venus thus recieve twice as much solar flux than earth .
