Question
From a lab, I pulled a block on a track that had weight at the endof the track. The block had a wooden surface, felt surface, and acork surface and I pulled the block on all three surfaces. 1. How does the coefficient of kinetic friction vary with the massof the block? 2. Theoretically, how does the coefficient of kinetic friction varywith the area of contact between the block and the horizontalsurface? 3. How does the coefficient of kinetic friction vary with the typeof material between the friction block and the horizontalblock? 4. How does the coefficient of kinetic friction vary as thespeed varied due to the different hanging masses? 5. Which has greater effect on kinetic friction: increasing themass of the block or the type of materials in contact? 6. How would the results have differed in this experiment if thepulley end of the track was lower than the other end of the trackand explain.
Explanation / Answer
1)the coefficient of kinetic friction does not depends on the mass of block. It is mainly depends on the nature of surface area which is in contact.
2)the coefficient of kinetic friction is independent of the area of contact as long as the normal force is same.
3)the coefficient of kinetic friction is depends on the degree of smoothness of block and horizontal surface.
4)once the block over come the static friction it comes to motion and the coefficinet of kinetic friction present which is independent of the speed of block and the force acting on it(hanging masses).
5)the mass and the type of material causes the change in kinetic friciton.
6)once the block over come the static friction it comes to motion and the kinetic friction present which is independent of the force acting on it(hanging masses).it does not vary even the hanging mass lowered.because the kinetic friction is less than static friction.
