Question
The figure shows a coil entering a region (inside the dashed rectangle) where the magnetic field B is constant. Assume B is into the page. The maximum emf induced in the 5.85 ohm coil as it enters the field is coil I 0.468 V. The coil is connected to a 6.50 ohm resistor. (a) Calculate the maximum current in the coil. (b) Does the magnetic flux increase or decrease as the coil enters the region? Explain. (c) What is the direction of the induced current in the coil, clockwise or counter-clockwise? Explain. (d) What is the direction of the force on the coil? Explain. (e) What is the flux change while the coil is entirely inside the region of the magnetic field? Explain.Explanation / Answer
(a) total resistance= 5.85+6.5=12.35 ohm
induced emf=e= 0.468
current= i= e/r= 0.468/12.35
i=0.038 A.
(b) As the coil enters the region, the magnetic flux increases. that is because more area of coil is in the magnetic field. flux= area* magnetic field. As area increases, the magnetic flux increases.
(c)since the magnetic flux linked with the coilis increasing. soaccoridng to LENZS law , the induced current will be such that it will oppose the original magnetic field. since the source/original magnetic field si inwards, so the magnetic field in the coil due t induced current must be outwards. using right hand thumb rule, the current must be COUNTER CLOCKWISE.
(d)force= i (LxB)
using cross product rule, direction of force on the coil will be towards left.
(e)when the coil is entirely inside the field, the area becomes constant and field is also constant. so the magnetic flux is constant. so the change in magnetic flux=0
