Homework #3 . Electric F × Home | Chegg.com www.webassign.net/web/Student/Assignment.Responses/submit ?dep=12763527 C Search An electron has an initial velocity of 8.5 x 106 m/s in the x direction. It enters a uniform electric field E (400 N/C) j, which is in the y direction. a) Find the acceleration of the electron. m/s2 (b) How long does it take for the electron to travel 10 cm in the x direction in the field? (c) By how much and in what direction is the electron deflected (displaced in the y-direction) after traveling 10 cm in the x direction in the field? A second - 22 nc charge is placed on the x axis 3 m to the right of the origin. What is the potential at a point on the x axis 10 m to the left of the origin?Explanation / Answer
v = 8.5 * 10^6 i^ m/s
E = 400 j^ N/C
(a)
Acceleration on an electron due to Electric Field is give by,
q*E = m*a
1.6*10^-19 * 400 = 9.1*10^-31 * a
ay = 7.03 * 10^13 j^ m/s^2
Acceleration of the electron, ay = 7.03 * 10^13 j^ m/s^2
(b)
There is no Force on electron in the x direction.
Therefore, Time taken to travel 10 cm in the x direction,
t = distance/speed
t = (0.1/8.5 * 10^6) s
t = 1.176 * 10^-8 s
(c)
Deflected by,
Sy = u*t + 1/2 *ayt^2
Sy = 0 + 1/2 * 7.03 * 10^13 * (1.176 * 10^-8)^2
Sy = 0.486 cm
Angle = tan^-1(0.486/10)
Angle = 2.78 Clockwise form +ve x axis.
