Question

A ball is dropped from an upper floor, some unknown
distance above your apartment. As you look out of your window, which is 1.2 m tall, you observe that it takes the ball
0.18 s to traverse the length of the window. Determine how
high above the top of your window the ball was dropped.
Ignore the effects of air resistance.

Explanation / Answer

Velocity with which the ball transverses the length of the window

v = (1.2m) / (0.18s) = 6.67 m/s

Since ball was dropped the initial velocity is zero i.e. u = 0 m/s

Let h be the height above your window.

Using equation in vertical motion

v2 - u2 = 2g(h+1.2)

6.672 - 0 = 2 (9.8) (h+1.2)

h = 1.07 m
