Question
Problem #7(Due 2/12 Friday by 9:00 a.m.)
a) A charge moves along the +x axis and experiences no magnetic force, although there is a magnetic field. What can you conclude about the direction of the magnetic field? Explain
b) A moving charge experiences the maximum possible magnetic force when moving in a magnetic field. What can you conclude about the angle that the charge's velocity makes with respect to the magnetic field? Explain
c) A particle that has a 8.2 microcoulumb charge moves with a velocity of magnitude 5.0 x 105 m/s. When the velocity points along the +x axis, the particle experiences no magnetic force, although there is a magnetic field present. The maximum possible magnetic force that the charge could experience has a magnitude of 0.68 N. Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field. Note that there are two possible answers for the direction of the field. Make sure you draw a diagrams indicating charges, velocities, forces, and magnetic fields.
Explanation / Answer
a)
F = qvB sin theta
if F = 0 it means that the angle between velocity and magnetic field is either zero or 180
b)
F = qvBsin theta
Force will be maximum if sin theta is maximum
theta = 90 degree
c)
F = 0 means theta can be zero or 180
along positive or negatve x axis
Fmax = qvB
0.68 = 8.2x5x10^2 x B
B = 0.000165 T
