Question

A missile was launched vertically with the initial speed of 2180 m/s and Superman decided to stop it. So he started chasing vertically with a constant speed of 180 m/s from the launching position 10 seconds after the launch of the missile.

a. How long does it take for Superman to catch the missile?
b. Find the height of the missile when it is caught.
c. Is the missile rising up or falling down when it got caught?
d. When the missile got caught by Superman, how far is it from the maximum height it can reach?

Explanation / Answer

a) h1 = h2

2180*t -1/2*9.8*t^2 = 180*(t-10) => t= 409 s

b) h1=h2=180*409 = 73620 m = 7.36*10^3 m

c) vf = vi – gt = 2180 – 9.8*409 = -1828.2 m/s ….falling down since velocity is negative.
