Question
Suppose that each of a person's hands makes contact with a different conductor over a surface area of 10.1 cm2. We measure the hand-to-hand resistance of the body by connecting the conductors to an ohmmeter that reads 1.01 104 when the hands are dry. We know that internal body resistance is only about 600 .
(a) Find the resistance across a 10.1 cm2 section of the skin.
(b) Find the resistivity of the skin, assuming it is 1.02 mm thick.
(c) Suppose the area of contact of each hand with a conductor is reduced to 1.04 cm2. Find the resistance between the hands.
Explanation / Answer
A) total resistance = resistance offered by both hands + internal body resistance
10100=2R+ 600
2R =10100-600=9500
R=4750 Ohms
b) R =pL/A
p=RA/L=4750*10.1/0.102 Ohm.cm = 4703 Ohm.meter
c) R of each hand =4703*10.1/1.04 = 45673 as R is inversalyproportional to area
Total hand to hand resistance = 2*45673+600= 91946 Ohms
