Question
Need help answering some questions on physics lab. I have attached the lab data and questions are at the bottom.
We charged up some objects and indicated if the leaves moved apart a lot, a little, or not at all.
Question 1 Does the electroscope tell you what kind of charge (positive or negative) you have on your rod?
Explain your answer. NOTE: When answering all of the rest of the following questions it’s easier to describe the situations if you just use an example. You can start off your answers with, “Let’s say that the rod is negative …”, and then continue on from there.
Question 2 Describe in your own words why the leaves separate when you bring a charged rod close to the electroscope’s metal ball. Make sure you also explain why charges accumulate on the leaves.
Question 3 Why do the rods become charged when you rub them with the fur, cloth, or bag? What happens to the electrons?
Explanation / Answer
(1) Let us say the rod is negatively charged, due to induction metal ball will be positively charged and hence leaves will become negatively charged. Since there are similar charge on the leaves hence they will be repelled each other. Similarly, in case of positive charge on the rod, metal ball will be negatively charged due to induction consequenctly leaves will be positively charge and will be repelled. Therefore it is not possible to check whether rod is positively or negatively charged because in both the case leaves are repelled.
(2) Due to induction redsitribution of charge will takes place on the metal ball and leave system. That is opposite charge. to that of the rod, will accumulate on the metal ball and similar charge, to that of rod, will accunulate on the leaves. Since leaves have same charge therefore they will repell each other due to Coulomb repulsion.
(3) Due to fricition, on rubbing, electrons gain energy and transfer of electron from one material to other takes place. The electron receiving material acquires negative charge where as the material loosing electrons will axquire positive charge.
