Question

3. Jack and Jill are on two different floors of their high rise office building and looking out of their respective windows. Jack sees a flower pot go past his window ledge and Jill sees the same pot go past her window ledge a little while later. The time between the two observed events was 4.4 s. Assume air resistance is negligible.

(a) If the speed of the pot as it passes Jill's window is 60.0 m/s, what was its speed when Jack saw it go by?

_________________m/s

(b) What is the height between the two window ledges?

_______________ m

Explanation / Answer

(a) If the speed of the pot as it passes Jill's window is 60 m/s, what was its speed when Jack saw it go by?

The vertical velocity of a falling object increases 9.8 m/s each second
acceleration = 9.8 m/s^2

Final velocity = Initial velocity + 9.8 * time
Initial velocity is at Jack’s window
Final velocity is at Jill’s window = 60 m/s

60 = Initial velocity + 9.8 * 4.4
Initial velocity = 60 – (9.8 * 4.4) = 16.88 m/s

(b)

What is the height between the two window ledges?
The height between the two window ledges = the distance that the object fall during the 4.4 seconds.

Distance = average velocity * time
average velocity = ½ * (16.88 + 60) = 38.44 m/s
Distance = 38.44 *4.4 = 169.136 meters
