Exercise 17.18
A steel tank is completely filled with 3.00 m3 of ethanol when both the tank and the ethanol are at a temperature of 30.5 C .
Part A
When the tank and its contents have cooled to 15.5 C , what additional volume of ethanol can be put into the tank?
Express your answer using two significant figures.
Explanation / Answer
Use the following equation:
Vt = Vo[1+(3alfa) x delta t*C]
=>V(ethanol at 15.5*C) = 3.00 [ 1 + 3 x 250 x 10^-6 x (15.5-30.5)] = 3.00[1- 0.1125] = 2.966 m^3
=>V(steel at 15.5*C) = 3.00 [ 1 + 3 x 12 x 10^-6 x (15.5-30.5)] = 3.00[1-0.00054] = 2.998 m^3
Thus ethanol can be added = 2.998 - 2.966 = 0.032 m^3 = 3.2x10^-2 m^3
