Question

The group Atoms for Peace is performing a concert and you have seats 50 m from the stage. You have borrowed a sound meter from your physicist professor and measured the sound level at our set to be 110 dB.

a) What is the power produced by the amplifiers on the stage?

b) People in the front row are 8 m from the amplifliers on stage. What intensity of sound do they experience? Express in decibels

c) If the human eardrum has an area of 5 mm^2, how much energy is absorbed per second by the ears of people sitting in the front row?

Explanation / Answer

sound level=110 dB

dbm=10log(P/0.001)

P=power

110=10log(P/0.001)

11=log(P/0.001)

so we get Power gained=1*1011 watts

intensity,i=1/r2

i=1/82=0.0156m-2=0.0156 dB

Area=5 mm2=5*10-6m2

So Energy / sec is nothing but power.

Power=Area*intensity=5*10-6m2*0.0156 dB=7.8*10-8 W
