Question

Ball 1 has a charge of +14 Mu C and is placed at the origin at rest. What is the electric field at the point x=1, y=0 due to ball 1? What is the electric field at the point x=2, y=0 due to ball 1? By what factor does this magnitude differ from the magnitude of the electric field at x=1. y=0 due to ball 1? How does the direction of the electric field differ at these two points? What is the electric field at the point x=1, y=2 due to ball 1? Sketch the electric field vectors on the same x-y plane at the following points. Make sure both the magnitudes and directions are correct (to scale)

Explanation / Answer

(i) We know the elcetric field E = kQ/r2 = 9x10^9 * 14x10^-6 / 1 =126 x 103 N/C...Ans.

(ii) elcetric field E = kQ/r2 = 9x10^9 * 14x10^-6 / 4 =31.5 x 103 N/C.....Ans.

factor = 126/31.5 = 4 times

(iii) E at x=1 and y=2 distance = sqrt(1+4) = sqrt(5)

E = kQ/r2 = 9x10^9 * 14x10^-6 / 5 =25.2 x 103 N/C.....Ans.
