Over the weekend you are speaking with one of your family members, who is concerned with the "radiation” that comes from electric transmission lines. Based on what you have learned in physics. you are pretty sure that they just produce magnetic fields - and that you can clearly present to your concerned family why they don't need to worry. You look up the information on the type of power lines that run by your family member's house, and see that they are 20m above the ground and carry 200A at 110 kV

Explanation / Answer

The length of transmission line is assumed to be infinite.

The current flowing in the wire will set up a magnetic field around the wire. The magnitude of this magnetic field is given by

B = u0 * I / 2*pi*r

B = 4*pi*10-7 * 200 / 2*pi*20

B = 2 uT

This field is extremely less and won't have any radiation effect. To have an idea , Commercially available MRI scanners for routine clinical use exist from 0.2T to 3.0T and ( they are proved to be harmless) which is considerably more than 2 uT ( 0.000002 T)
