Question

For Silver, design an experimental protocol. Search the literature to find some examples of scenarios in which AAS may be employed to determine the concentration of your element in a sample. Select a specific application, for example, the analysis of soil for selenium content. Write a protocol for the sample preparation (you might find it helpful to look for government resources, i.e. FDA, that publish standardized methods for analysis which could be adapted for your scenario). Based on your experience working with the instrument, write instructions for collecting and analyzing the data. The protocols should be thorough enough that if you were a lab manager, you could give it to someone working for you and they would be able to execute the experiment. Be sure to cite your sources.

Explanation / Answer

Calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (CF-LIBS) method is employed for quantitative determination of oxide concentrations in multi-component materials. Industrial oxide materials from steel industry are laser ablated in air, and the optical plasma emission is collected by spectrometers and gated detectors. The temperature and electron number density of laser-induced plasma are determined from measured LIBS spectra. Emission lines of aluminium (Al), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), magnesium (Mg), silicon (Si), titanium (Ti), and chromium (Cr) of low self-absorption are selected, and the concentration of oxides CaO, Al(2)O(3), MgO, SiO(2), FeO, MnO, TiO(2), and Cr(2)O(3) is calculated by CF-LIBS analysis.
