Question
The only I was given to complete this problem was the seismograph:
The following seismograph was acquired in an area where the dip of the refractor is known to be zero (parallel to the surface)
1. Determine the geophone station spacing (to the nearest integer number of meters)
2. Draw a traveltime graph showing the direct and refraction arrival times.
3. Determine Velocity 1, Velocity 2 and the depth to the refractor. Draw a sketch of your subsurface model.
4. Add a reflection traveltime curve.
Thanks!

First, using the equations derived in class, interpret these data for the top two layers only. The use the program REFRACT to characterize all layers evident in these data.Explanation / Answer
1. Geophone station spacing is nothing but the group interval, which was given in the seismogram as 18m.
2.Travel time curve is nothing but a reocrd of velocity of waves at different layers. To draw the travel time curves travel times and distance between the shot and geophone should be known.
3.Velocities can be determined from the graf by getting correct slopes. The depth of the refractor can be know when the velcoities and time are known.
A single seismogram which was given is a visual record of the subsurface geology and interpret it in the form of clear subsurface structure. Without the sufficient data as above, solution cannot be full filled from only a seismogram.
