Quiz 5 Introductory Mechanies Spring 2018 Name: Multiple choice 1.- 10 points A particle undergoes acceleration a while moving from point 1 to point 2. Which of the choices shows the velocity vector as the object moves away from point 2? A. B. C. D. 2.- 10 points A car is traveling around a curve at a steady 45 mph. Is the car accelerating? a) Yes b) No A. D. 3.- 20 points car is traveling around a curve at a steady 45 mph. Which vector shows the direction of the car's acceleration a) Vector A b) Vector IB c) vector C d) Vector D e) The acceleration vector is 0. B. C.

Explanation / Answer

1) Initially, the velocity is in horizontal direction and acceleration is in verticle direction. This acceleration adds some velocity in verticle direction while it travels from 1 to 2

Hence net velocity will be resultant of horizontal velocity ( towards left ) and vertical velocity ( downwards ).

Answer will be C

2) Even if the magnitude of velocity is constant, the direction of velocity is constantly changing while taking this turn. Hence this motion is accelerated. ( change in velocity vector over time is acceleration)

Answer is a) Yes

3) In a circular motion, the acceleration of the object is perpendicular to its velocity. Velocity is tangential to the location of the object in the direction of motion.

Hence vector B will show car's acceleration's direction

Answer b) Vector B
