Filoviridae is the only known virus family which is not studied much yet. There are 4 distinguishing subtypes of Ebola.

Origin-

Late 1970s startled the international community by the detection of Ebola virus. It was the causative agent of hemorrhagic fever in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Sudan. Though international scientific teams found that transmission was under control, still could construct data from the survivors. There was no proper nursing technique or availability of sterile instruments, which cause spread of infection to the hospital and other medical facilities staff. Thus, medical support was ceased. Patients were separated from the normal people, so that condition outside clinics could be controlled. Only data of outbreak available was from the incident reported in Sudan and Tandala in DRC in late 1970s.

In 1989, Ebola appeared again and this time in monkeys imported in Virginia. The virus spread to others till 1992 and again in 1996.

Controls were introduced for the virus outbreaks in 1989 and by 1990s laboratory studies were improved for diagnosis of nonhuman primate infections. However, there was lack of the materials necessary for confirmatory tests.

Ebola hemorrhagic fever (EHF) appeared in Africa in 1976–1979, and was not recorded again until 1994, but it was surviving in natural environment.

In the time span of 1981–1985, Ebola virus inspection was carried out alongside with efforts to identify monkeypox. This surveillance may have identified several cases and estimated the seroprevalence among the population; however, the findings are subject to caution because of limitations of valid laboratory results. In 1995, Serosurveillance also suggested that human infections may have occurred from time to time.
