Not every object that moves downward is in freefall. What is the requirement for an object to be in free fall? Is an elevator in freefall if it is functioning properly? ExplanExplanation / Answer
1)The mass has no effect on the acceleratiuon due to gravity.
we know that, g = G M/r^2
where, G is gravitational constant ; M is the mass of earth and R is the radius of earth.
So we see that expression of g is independent of mass of object and hence no effect.
2)Stays the same.
Since g has a constant value for a planet as discussed above and hence it stays same.
3)Technically, the object moving upwards is in fee fall as the gravity is the only force acting on it and tries to pull it down. As a result, at the top of the motion the obejct has zero velocity and it begins to fall back towards ground.
4)The apple has an acceleration equal to that of gravity, Once after release it falls freely towards the Earth.
5)There should be no air drag, as the drag force always acts in the direction apposite to that of the motion.
No an elevator is not in freefall when it is functioning properly.
