Answer the following questions based on the circuit in Fig. 8. (a) When switches Si and S, are open, the ammeter reading is 0.6 A and voltmeter reading is 2.4 V 4. calculate: the resistance of the lamp; (b) Compare the brightness of the lamp when both switches are open as in (a) and when only switeh (c) Compare the brightness of the lamp when both switches are open as in (a) and when both (d) For R2-4 , if switch S1 is opened but switch S2 is closed, what is ammeter reading? what is . the resistance of Ri. Si is closed. Give a quantitative explanation. switches Si and S2 are closed. Give a quantitative explanation. voltmeter reading? Si S2 R Ri Figure 8

Explanation / Answer

4.

(a) Battery voltage = 6 V

I = 0.6 A

total resistance = V/I = 6/0.6 = 10 ohm

Resistance of lamp = 2.4/0.6 = 4 ohm

R1 = 10-4 = 6 ohm

(b) When both switch are open current throuh lamp = 0.6A

when only switch S1 is closed, current through lamp = 6/4 = 1.5 A

Hence, the lamp would be brighter when only switch S1 is closed.

(c) When both switch are open current throuh lamp = 0.6A (given)

When both switch are closed voltage across lamp = 6 V

current = 6/4 = 1.5 A

Hence lamp will be brighter when both switches are closed.

(d) Voltmeter reading would be 6 V.

total courrent through the circuit = 6/4A +6/4A = 3 A

Hence, ammeter reading = 3A
