AP* Physics 1: Momentum Free Response Name: Masun own Period: S Date: /7 / 7 Question 1 A 15.o-kg wagon with wheels that turn with negligible friction travels to the right at 5.0 m/s on a horizontal surface with negligible friction as shown in the diagram. When the wagon reaches Point A, a 5.0-kg mass is placed upon the wagon. v=5.0 m/s 5.0 kg (a) Determine the magnitude of the momentum of the wagon before the mass is placed upon it. (b) Determine the speed of the wagon after the mass is placed upon it.

Explanation / Answer

momentum before putting mass

P= mv= 15*5= 75 kgm/s

momentum after collision

P= (m1+m2)V= (15+5) V= 20 V

applying conservation of momentum

momentum before collision= momentum after collision

75= 20 V

V= 3.75 m/s
