Question

4.-/4 pointsBUElemPhys1 3.P.102. Try doing this problem without a calculator. Three blocks are placed side-by-side on a frictionless horizontal surface and subjected to a horizontal force F, that causes the blocks to accelerate from rest to the right. Consider case 1 only. 2.0 kg 2.0 kg 5.0 3.0 kg 5.0 kg 3.0 kg Case 1 Case 2 In case 1, the 2.0 kg block experiences an acceleration of 1.20 m/s2 to the right (a) Calculate the magnitude of the net force acting on the 2.0 kg block (b) Calculate the magnitude of the horizontal force F. (c) Calculate the magnitude of the force applied by the 5.0 kg block on the 2.0 kg block. (d) Calculate the magnitude of the force applied by the 3.0 kg block on the 2.0 kg block.

Explanation / Answer

a) net force on 2 kg block = ma = 2*1.2 = 2.4 N

Writing the force equations we have

F - T1 = 3a ------------(1)

T1 - T2 = 2a ------------(2)

T2 = 5a ----------(3)

Adding all the equations we have

b) F = 10 a = 10*1.2 = 12 N

c) T2 = 5a = 5*1.2 = 6 N

d) T1 = F - 3a = 12 - 3*1.2 = 8.4 N
