Question
Where am I going wrong?
A thin, square, conducting plate 58.0 cm on a side lies in the xy plane. A total charge of 3.90 x 10-8 C is placed on the plate. You may assume the charge density is uniform. (a) Find the charge density on each face of the plate. 1.72(10..-7) × What is the definition of surface charge density? C/m2 (b) Find the electric field just above the plate magnitude 19435 direction (upward You appear to have correctly calculated the field using your incorrect result from part (a). N/C (c) Find the electric field just below the plate magnitude 19435 direction (downward ) You are correct that the magnitude of the field just below the plate will be the same as the field just above. N/CExplanation / Answer
a) for a cinducting plate the charge is uniformly distributed on both surfaces.
so, chanrge density, sigma = q/(2*A)
= 3.9*10^-8/(2*0.58^2)
= 5.80*10^-8 C/m^2
b) E = sigma/epsilon
= 5.80*10^-8/(8.854*10^-12)
= 6551 N/c (upward)
c) E = sigma/epsilon
= 5.80*10^-8/(8.854*10^-12)
= 6551 N/c (downward)
