Question

a) In several jungle adventure movies, the hero and heroine escape the bad guys by hiding underwater for extended periods of time. To do this, they breathe through long vertical hollow reeds. Imagine that in one movie, the water is so clear that to be safely hidden the two are at a depth of 15 m. As a science consultant to the movie producers, you tell them that this is not a realistic depth and the knowledgeable viewer will laugh during this scene. Explain why this is SO b) A ship sails from seawater into freshwater (see densities on the cover sheet). Will it slightly sink, remain at the same height or slightly rise along this route? Explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

a) a that depth the pressre in water has significantly risen and to draw air from straw , we need to apply the same amount of pressure through mouth or nose which is not practically possible for doing long periods of time.

b) sea water is more denser than fresh water. So it offers more buoyancy for same amount of volume of ship sunk. So to make the ship float we need more amount of volume of ship underwater than the volume required in sea water. So the ship will sink a bit when it goes from sea water to fresh water.
