11.–/5 points CLPhys1 11.P.055. Ask Your Teacher My Notes Question Part Points Submissions Used Two Blocks on a Pulley In Fig. 11-36, one block has a mass M = 500 g, the other has mass m = 460 g, and the pulley, which is mounted in horizontal frictionless bearings, has a radius of 5.00 cm. When released from rest, the heavier block falls 81.3 cm in 2.59 s (without the cord slipping on the pulley). Figure 11-36

(a) What is the magnitude of the block's acceleration? m/s2

(b) What is the tension in the part of the cord that supports the heavier block? N

(c) What is the tension in the part of the cord that supports the lighter block? N

(d) What is the magnitude of the pulley's angular acceleration? rad/s2

(e) What is its rotational inertia? kg·m2

nm

Explanation / Answer

a) let a is acceleration of the blocks.

use, y = (1/2)*a*t^2

a = 2*y/t^2

= 2*0.813/2.59^2

= 0.242 m/s^2

b) TM = M*(g - a)

= 0.5*(9.8 - 0.242)

= 4.78 N

c) Tm = m*(g + a)

= 0.46*(9.8 + 0.242)

= 4.619 N

d) alfa = a/r

= 0.242/0.05

= 4.84 rad/s^2

e) net torque on pulley = I*alfa

(TM - Tm)*r = I*alfa

==> I = (TM - Tm)*r/alfa

= ( 4.78 - 4.619)*0.05/4.84

= 1.66*10^-3 kg.m^2
