Question
A tortoise can run with a speed of 0.12 m/s, and a hare can run 20 times as fast. In a race, they both start at the same time, but the hare stops to rest for 2.0 minutes. The tortoise wins by a shell (40 cm). (A) how long does the race take? (B) what is the length of the race? A tortoise can run with a speed of 0.12 m/s, and a hare can run 20 times as fast. The tortoise wins by a shell (40 cm). (A) how long does the race take? (B) what is the length of the race?Explanation / Answer
(A) suppose race go on for time t.
distance travelled by tortoise = 0.12 t
distance by hare = (20 x 0.12) (t - 120)
and distance by tortoise - distance hare = 0.40 m
0.12 t - 2.4t + 288 = 0.4
t = 126.14 sec ....Ans
(B) L = 0.12 t = 15.14 m .....Ans
