Question
Suppose you work for a company that produces packaging. You are told that a new material is available to protect the package if dropped, provided the package hits the ground at less than 25 ft/sec. The average package weight is 20 pounds with rectangular dimensions of 12 by 12 by 8 inches. Suppose the delivery person holds the package at a height no greater than 8 feet. Synthesize a well-formed solution that determines the maximum speed when the package is dropped and hits the ground. Test your solution with the given values and find out whether the packaging material provides enough protection when carried by the delivery person.
Explanation / Answer
As an object is dropped, it's speed is zero, it keeps increasing with time or distance, due to gravitational force, with acceleration g = 32.17 ft/sec2
We can find it's speed, after it falls through a distance of h, using
V2 = U2 + 2 g h
taking U = 0 , g= 32.17 and h = 8 ft,
V = ( 2 x 32.17 x 8)1/2 = 22.68 ft/ sec
As this speed is less than 25 ft/sec, packaging material will keep package safe if dropped from 8 ft.
