Question
A man sits on a four-legged chair with his legs outstretched so that his feet are off the floor (and not touching anything else). The combined mass of the man and chair is 95.0 kg. The chair legs are circular and each leg has a radius of 0.500 cm at the bottom.
a) In a demonstration of balance, the man now leans back so that the front legs of the chair are no longer in contact with the floor and the man’s legs are still outstretched. Each of the back legs of the chair now has a contact area with the floor that is only ¼ of the original contact area of each leg when the man was sitting normally. Calculate the pressure that each back leg of the chair exerts on the floor.
I got 2.96 x 10^6 Pa for the pressure that each leg exerts on the floor. Now, find the pressure of the back leg
Explanation / Answer
Wt exerted for each leg = 95/4 = 23.75 kg
area = pi r^2 = 3.14*0.005^2 = 0.0000785
Pressure = F/area = 23.75*9.8/0.0000785 = 2. 96 * 10^6 Pa
The answer should be 2.96x10^6Pa.
P=(95.0)(9.80)/(4)(3.14)(0.005^2)=2.96x10^6(Answer)
