Question
a) In Figure 5A above, in which direction is the induced current in the resistor R when the switch S is first closed?.
b) Assume the switch in Figure 5A above has been closed for some long time and remains closed. Is there an induced
current in the resistor R? Briefly explain why or why not.
c) Assume the switch in Figure 5A above has been closed for some long time. In which direction is the induced current
in the resistor R when the switch S is first re-opened
d) In the Figure 5B above which end, top or bottom, of the metal bar will become negatively charged as the bar moves
away from the wire? Note that the current in the wire is constant.
Explanation / Answer
5a.
in the figure 5A the induced current will be in clock wise direction using Lenz law.
5b.when the switch is closed for long time there will be no change in flux across the loop therefore induced emf will be zero .induced current will be zero.
5c.
when the switch is reopen after long time connection the current in the coil will be in anticlock wise sense or fromleft to right across the resistance R
5d.
in figure 5d the top end of the metal war will be positive and lower end will be negative.
the force acting on the charge moving in magnetic field F=qVXB
