Question

1-A 70.0 g ball of clay is thrown horizontally with a speed of 9.00 m/s toward a 940 g block resting on a frictionless surface. It hits the block and sticks. The clay exerts a constant force on the block during the 12.0 ms it takes the clay to come to rest relative to the block. After 12.0 ms , the block and the clay are sliding along the surface as a single system.

a) What is their speed after the collision?

Express your answer with the appropriate units.

b)What is the force of the clay on the block during the collision?

Express your answer with the appropriate units.

c)What is the force of the block on the clay?

Express your answer with the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

a)from conservation of momentum

m1v1 + m2v2 = (m1 + m2)vf

but m2 was resting initially

vf = m1v1/(m1 + m2)

vf = 0.07 x 9/(0.07 + 0.94) = 0.62 m/s

Hence, vf = 0.62 m/s

b)we know that, impulse is

I = F x t also I = m (v2 - v1)

F x t = m (v2 - v1)

F = m (v2 - v1)/t

F = 0.94 (0.62 - 0)/12 x 10^-3 = 48.57 N

Hence, F = 48.57 N

c)F = -48.57 N (action and reaction principle applied)
