Question

A small statue has a height of 3.0 cm and is placed in front of a concave mirror. The image of the statue is inverted, 1.6 cm tall, and located 11 cm in from the mirror. Find the focal length of the mirror. f = 7.2 cm The outside mirror on the passenger side of a car is convex and has a focal length of -7.7 m. Relative to this mirror, a truck traveling in the rear has an object distance of 14 m. (a) Find the image distance of the truck. m (b) Find the magnification of the mirror. The drawings show two examples in which a ray of light is refracted at the interface between two liquids. In each example the incident ray is in liquid A and strikes the interface at the same angle of Incidence. In one case the ray is refracted into liquid B, and in the other it is refracted into liquid C. The dashed lines denote the normal to the interfaces. Rank the indices of refraction of the three liquids in descending order (largest first).

Explanation / Answer

Q8.

a)
1/do + 1/di = 1/f

So,
1/14 + 1/di = 1/-7.7

=> di = -4.97m (or -5 m rounded off)

b)
m = -di/do
= - - 4.97/14
= 0.35
