Question

During an X-ray examination a person receives a dose of 60 mrem in 4.6 kg of tissue. The RBE of X-rays is 1.0. Use that 1rad=102J/kg and 1eV=1.602×1019J.

Part A

Determine the total energy absorbed by the 4.6 kg of body tissue.

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Part B

Determine the energy in joules of each 50,000-eV X-ray photon.

Express your answer using two significant figures.

Part C

Determine the number of photons absorbed by that tissue.

Express your answer using two significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

Dose can be defined as energy absorbed by unit mass, from the question we know that person got dose of 60mrem in 4.6 kg of tissue.

we know that 1rad = 1rem

60 mrem = 60mrad = 60 X 10-3 X 10-2 J/kg = 60X10-5 J/kg

So person getting 60mrem so it is equal to 0.6mGy or 0.6 X10-3 J/kg

B)

1 eV = 1.6X10-19 J

50000 eV = 1.6X10-19 X 50000J = 8X10-15 J

C)

0.6mGy (J/kg) total energy absorbed by the tissue and 8X10-15 J is energy of single photon

so 0.6X10-3 J/kg /8X10-15 J = 75X109 photons are absorbed by that tissue
