Question
1- If a piece of clear glass rod with an index of refraction ‘n’ is placed in a clear liquid with the same index of refraction ‘n’, the glass becomes completely invisible. Why? If rod and liquid medium have a different refractive index say n1and n2, the rod is clearly visible. Why?
2. Can we replace the semi cylindrical lens with a rectangular block in the above experiment for index of refraction, dispersion and total internal reflection? Explain the reason also.
glass tube glass of liquid n's different n's identicalExplanation / Answer
An object can be seen when the light falling on object reflects back to eyes
In 1st case as liquid and glass have same refractive index, light does not get reflected back due to rod
where as in second case refractive index of liquid is different from that of rod, which makes light to reflect and it appears to eyes
