Question

Linearly polarized light with the plane of polarization horizontal enters from the left and passes axis oriented through a single polarizer with the transmission vertically (0 degree relative to the vertical). Unpolarized light enters from the left and passes through a single polarizer with the transmission axis oriented horizontally (90 degree relative to the vertical). Unpolarized light enters from the left and passes through one polarizer with the transmission axis oriented 45 degree CW relative to the vertical and then through a second polarizer with the transmission axis oriented 45 degree CW relative to the vertical. Unpolarized light enters from the left and passes through a single polarizer with the transmission axis oriented vertically (0 degree relative to the vertical). Linearly polarized light polarized at an angle 45 degree CCW from the vertical enters from the left and passes through a single polarizer with the transmission axis oriented 45 degree CCW relativ

Explanation / Answer

The answers to the last 3 are incorrect so I shall only answer that.

1] Unpolarized light is first passed through a polarizer at an angle of 45 degrees with vertical. The intensity after this will be halved. Now if another polarizer is added which is again at an angle of 45 degrees to vertical then the intensity would remain the same and so finally the outcome will be partial intensity.

2] Unpolarized light passes through a polarizer at an angle of zero degrees to vertical. Since unpolarized light has no preferred direction of polarization, therefore, the intensity will be partial.

3] The linearly polarized light passing from the polarizer which is at an angle of 45 degrees to vertical passes through another polarizer at 45 degrees to vertical. So, the angle between them is 0 and therefore the intensity will be full.
