X Incorrect Question 16 of 16 Map Sapling Learning A 5.33-mm-high firefly sits on the axis of, and 10.3 m in front of, the thin lens A, whose focal length is 6.77 cm. Behind lens A there is another thin lens, lens B, with focal length 26.3 cm. The two lenses share a common axis and are 61.3 cm apart. Is the image of the firefly that lens B forms real or virtual? O Virtual O Real How far from lens B is this image located (expressed as a positive number)? Number cm What is the height of this image (as a positive number? Number mm s this image upright or inverted with respect to the firefly? O Upright O Inverted Incorrect Previous ® Give Up & View Solution Try Again Next Ext Explanation

Explanation / Answer

a)

Let us first find the image distance for lens 1,

do1=10.3cm, F1=6.77cm

1/F1=1/do1+1/di1

1/10.3 = 1/6.77 +1/di1

di1=-19.75cm

m=hi1/ho1=-di1/do1 = -(-19.75) = 19.75

hi1=19.75*ho1=19.75*0.00533 = 0.1053m = 105.3mm

Thus image hi1 is upright.

Since image is upright it’s on the same side as the object.

Now this image works as object for lens 2,

F2=26.3cm, do2= 19.75+61.3 = 81.05cm

1/F2=1/do2+1/di2

1/26.3 = 1/81.05 +1/di2

di2= 38.93cm

positive values shows image is opposite side of the object.

m=hi2/ho2=-di2/do2 = -(38.93/81.05) = -0.48

b)

hi2= -0.48*ho1= -0.48*105.3= -50.54mm

c)

Thus image hi2 is inverted.
